Before introducing letter recognition, it is crucial for children to have a solid foundation in basic shape recognition. This skill helps them differentiate between similar-looking letters, such as “b” and “d,” and understand spatial orientation. Recognising shapes also prepares the brain for the abstract concept that a symbol (letter) represents a sound. Without this foundational ability, learning to read becomes significantly more challenging, as children may struggle to distinguish letters and connect them to their corresponding sounds effectively.

We incorporate phonics sound games, including memory games, to strengthen essential pre-reading skills. Phonics is the method of teaching reading by linking letters to their corresponding sounds, helping children decode words more easily. Through playful activities, learners develop sound recognition, auditory memory, and letter-sound associations, all of which are crucial for fluent reading. These games make learning engaging while reinforcing the skills needed for confident and independent reading.
We focus on exercises that strengthen fine motor skills and proper pencil grip, ensuring children develop control and endurance for writing. A correct grip promotes fluid, legible handwriting and reduces hand fatigue, making the writing process more efficient and comfortable. By engaging in fun, hands-on activities, we help learners build the coordination needed for confident writing and academic success.

What is the difference between this program and the normal Tina Cowley Therapy?
Our regular reading classes follow the full Tina Cowley therapy program, which runs for 90 minutes and includes structured reading intervention. In contrast, Ticket Tots sessions are shorter, lasting 45 minutes, and focus on learning through play to build essential pre-reading skills. Before introducing formal reading, we ensure that foundational abilities—such as shape recognition, auditory processing, and fine motor control—are well-developed. This playful, skills-based approach sets young learners up for success when they transition into the full reading program.
